Yikes... Ike!

Well, Ike paid a visit to Dee Dee & Amber and their families. He wasn't a great guest, as he made a mess of their yards and took the electricity with him. Luckily they're all safe and well (just extremely hot without the electricity-powered a/c). No damage to their homes, just lots of work in their yards.

It's made me think about how much we rely on power!! I mean, really, what do you do that doesn't require power?! This blog wouldn't be happening without power. I wouldn't be writing it. You wouldn't be reading it. (Oh wait... does anybody read this?) Seriously, how would you communicate? Sure there's the good old fashioned snail mail (quick aside... Chase saw a USPS truck stopping at our house the other day and he said excitedly, "Mom, LOOK! It's the E-MAIL MAN!!" LOL). But what about the day to day stuff. How do you find out if you have school (granted, if there's no electricity, chances are, there's no school, but STILL... that's one thing you don't want to take for granted. Think of all the make-up work if you made the wrong assumption!) or church... the emergency broadcast system wouldn't even work. You don't have television or radio to send the messages to. Come to think of it, without electricity, the televisions and radio stations are probably not running either. I guess they could run off of generators, but without power in any of the homes, what's the point?! Anyway, I'm just sayin'...

Sure puts a damper on things! That's why we're supposed to have battery powered radios, flashlights, etc. for emergency stuff. (Not that I'm all that prepared :( )

I'm so glad to hear they are all safe! I didn't realize they would be in the path of that nasty storm! The lord watch out for them though it sounds like!

Oh, right, Kristy... Battery-operated! lol

Maren, they live in Friendswood which is between Galveston and Houston... directly in the hurricane's path. (They're about 23 miles from the coast, I think.) They were lucky to have NO flooding. :D
